Day of Surgery

Good Morning

DO NOT EAT ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE SURGERY UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED.

DO NOT CONSUME gum, mints, candy, cough drops, etc. the day of surgery.

DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES 24 HOURS PRIOR TO SURGERY.

You may drink clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to surgery (i.e. water, electrolyte drinks, black coffee or tea with NO CREAM OR MILK ADDITIVES) For juices: Clear juice only (no orange juice and no pulp). Any liquid that you cannot see through is not allowed.

Take your medications as instructed by your pre-operative testing nurse with a small sip of water.

Wear comfortable clothing today.

Hand/elbow surgery:  Loose armed shirt or t-shirt and pull-on pants
Shoulder surgery: Extra large t-shirt that will pull down over your arm in a sling
Foot or ankle surgery: Loose-legged pants or shorts; please bring crutches.
ACL reconstruction: You will have a large brace that locks the leg straight; wear shorts or very loose pants around the knee; you should plan to sit in the backseat of a 4-door car with your leg directly on the seat; please bring crutches
Knee surgery: Pants or shorts; you should plan to sit in the backseat of a 4-door car with your leg directly on the seat; please bring crutches
Face Surgery: Button up shirt
Breast Surgery: Extra large button-up shirt

Please bring the following with you:

  • Any outstanding paperwork
  • Picture ID
  • Eyeglass or contact case
  • Crutches, walker, or wheelchair (if applicable)

Please bathe or shower before coming to the surgery center. Do not use lotions or oil after bathing. Don’t forget to use your Hibiclens for your shower if instructed to do so by the preoperative testing nurse.

Remove all make-up and nail polish if instructed to do so by your pre-operative testing nurse. Please leave all jewelry and valuables at home. The Surgery Center cannot be held responsible for damage or loss if valuables are brought with you.

When you arrive a nurse will give you a gown to change into. Your clothing will be placed in your private locker and locked for security.

If you have not signed a consent form for your operation, you will be asked to do so. If you are under 18, your parent or legal guardian must accompany you and sign your consent form.

Your family or friend will be asked to wait in the waiting area until you have been prepared for surgery. One adult may stay with you in the pre-operative holding area until you are escorted to the operating suite. They will be able to rejoin you as soon as you are awake.

Please confirm your transportation arrangements! Remember, you cannot drive yourself home or be left alone for 24 hours.
